Siaka school for Special Children

K.A.G Siaka School for Special Children is a boarding school located in Bungoma County in the Western region of Kenya. Our goal is to support over 20 visually impaired children by funding their education and giving them a safe and happy haven as a positive foundation for their growth into productive citizens.

Through your help we will be able to provide the school with necessary stationery: braille books and machines, abacuses and cater for a trained special needs teacher. Enabling our children to have a conducive environment for study which will enhance comprehension of the world around them. They will not feel stigmatized when they grow up and will find a proper place in the society.

Disability is not inability!

Why Siaka?

Siaka school is a special school for visually impaired children. With most of these pupils being orphans and others being abandoned by their families due to their disability or total inability of the family of the child to cater to their special needs.

The plight of these children prompted the local KAG church and the community to take action and open this centre in 2014, with the aim of making the life of the children better and giving them a fighting chance for a positive and productive future. The school currently supports 12 children; both boys and girls from the local surrounding between 7-16 years.

The school today

Siaka School is currently the only centre available in the immediate community and is home to 12 children.

The school follows a regular curriculum, additional Braille, orientation and mobility lessons, operating under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education; being one of the seven special schools open to the public. The centre aims to provide education geared towards development of the child’s mental capabilities and physical growth.

Mathematics and science subjects are a problem to the children; however, they excel in English, Kiswahili and Social Studies as well as enjoying other activities, such as music and reading.

The challenges of Siaka

The school is run 100% by local volunteers (teachers, cooks, child care-taker, etc.) and funded by local well wishers and international donors. Through this, the school management is able to provide basics needs such as food, shelter, hygienic products, clothing and medical attention.

Due to financial challenges and constrains, the school is in dire need of braille books, stylus and slate kits and other relevant special education material. Scarcity of the learning materials slows down the teachers and the lessons, furthermore the school is still under construction thus lacking necessities like electricity and running water. There is also need to provide adequate dormitories and classrooms. The lack of sufficient housing infrastructure constrains the current boarding facilities thus the school is finding it difficult to provide decent sleeping arrangements (currently they sleep three per bed!).

KAG Siaka special school believes these sensory impaired pupils can do everything except to see.

Through education, we believe that they will not feel scorned when they grow up, as is the current situation within their familial relations, they will learn that disability is not inability; but rather an opportunity to be a productive citizen and a change-maker within the society.
