50 Street Youth Rehabilitation
Tumaini is a non-profit organization and we work towards economic development sustainability.
Many youths have been going through a lot of problems in the streets and the youths in Kiambiu slum are no different. We have had the opportunity to talk to them and understand their struggles starting with a relatively small number of 50. Some of the problems we identified include: lack of basic needs e.g. food, shelter and clothing. Some of them dropped out of school due to lack school fees and have unfortunately engaged in drug abuse as a survival mechanism in the brutal street life. Others is because they lost their jobs and lacked to secure another hence couldn’t sustain themselves. Loss of property in disastrous situations i.e. fire outbreaks. In summary, the streets aren’t safe for these youths are they are constantly exposed to harsh climatic conditions and violence attacks hence the need for rehabilitation as they transition from been homeless to having a home so that they are assisted to deal with all the mental trauma that comes with been homeless for a quite sometime.
We Tumaini as a team, we have tried our best to motivate and influence them whenever we are able . We provide them with food to sustain them . Clothes that they can change to and essential hygiene practices .For some we have managed to build them houses. We have taken others back to school so as to get educated with an aim to better their lives. Others have been able to get jobs through our assistance hence earning a stable monthly income. We are happy to see these improvements. We couldn’t have managed to all the above activities without the support from our donors. We appreciate them as we urge them to join us once more as we plan to build a rehabilitation center for the street youths so as to equip them with technical skills such as mechanics, tailoring and carpentry. These skills will play a pivotal role in their improvement of their lives status from homeless to self- employed.
